Animals

The procedure adopted by the Council to poison animals has, we've been told stopped in 2009. They used to put poison down for stray animals about twice a year. There are still locals that will leave poison down.

The Expats Cape Verde website is now providing Forums for those involved with helping or protecting animals and sea creatures in Cape Verde, on which they can promote their work such as turtles via SOS Tartarugas and Sal Animal Rescue for dogs and cats.

Sal Animal Rescue was the organisation that helped strays and provided treatment centre in Santa Maria but this organisation no longer exists. We are all greatful to the efforts of those that were in volved with the organisation.

A new organisation has now started to help dogs and cats in Santa Maria, the new organisation is called:

S.O.S. Cachorros & Gatos de Cabo Verde    (they are on Facebook)

In the above photos are baby turtles that have been released after hatching safely. And about Missie in the above photo, one of the dogs found that was just skin and bone and can only eat liquidised food, but was nursed back to health by Gemma and Jackie at Sal Animal Rescue. Refer to other articles on this website, this can be done by writing the word 'animals' or vetinary services within the search bar at the top of the page.

Update: From Jackie Costello, January 2010.....it is with regret that I must announce I cannot continue to run Sal Animal Rescue (SAR)......please refer to the reasons within the Expats Cape Verde website - Forum.
