Extending your Visa
Please refer to page 10 of this guide:
Those staying for long periods must get the visa extended a.s.a.p. this can be done at the Police Station in Espargos on Sal,or main Police Stations on other islands or Border Police Station in Praia, Santiago Island, or through a representative/Lawyer/Solicitor (for an additional fee). If you don't extend your visa you may be fined when leaving the country.(.....)
If you are staying to work or live on the islands, you must provide the Police or your representative for visa appications with your passport and proof of a contract for an apartment which is at least for six months, or proof that you have bought a property here.
People that have been either living or working on Sal should keep renewing their long term visa or there may be problems when trying to leave Sal. There have been a few threats of calling the Police by airport staff if you haven't paid your visa fees or extended your visa and people have been fined and a payment must be made at the airport before you are allowed to board the plane. Sometimes officials also check previous entry stamps and departure dates for visa's inaccuracies.
Getting an official visa is more important when or if you are staying to live or work on the island. To extend your visa, your passport must have been stamped at the airport with a Visa Stamp on arrival on Sal, without this it will cost you more (sometimes they don't put the Visa Stamp on your passport, if you have pre-paid in the UK). Also, you will be fined for the time you have been living on the island without a visa, on top of paying for a 3/6month visa when you wish to extend your stay.
