Holiday and Travel - Cape Verde

Travel and holiday information about the Cape Verde Islands with Cape Verde Tips. If you are just looking for information about Santa Maria on Sal Island we have lots more for you to know within our 'What's on - Sal Island' where you will find information about travel, accommodation, restaurants and bars, water sports, shops and services, tours and excursions, activities, events and more.

Cape Verde Tips provides a great insight into what the Cape Verde Islands has to offer. Holidays and flights to Cape Verde have become more popular over the winter with Scandinavian and UK tour operators offering more flights to Sal Island, Boavista, Santiago and Sao Vicente.

Pre-booking your holiday

Do your homework and decide which island you would prefer to visit, because the travel agents do not always know everything about all the Cape Verde Islands and, travel companies may want to direct you to an island, hotel, resort which could be less in demand, one of a few hotels they can send their customers to, or that it is better for them to book for you. Look at a number of Tour Operators/Travel Agencies to make some comparisons and then decide where you would like to stay and go!

There are All Inclusive Hotels and Resorts on the main tourists islands of Sal and Boa Vista. The Islands of Sao Vicente and Santiago also have a number of hotels used to accommodate travellers arriving on international flights.

There are more hotels being built but there are still some smaller pensions, guest houses and hotels that may offer bed and breakfast or more on the islands, which you may prefer to a resort, larger hotel or all inclusive hotel.

Rental Agencies on the islands manage apartments on behalf of owners, so you may wish to contact agencies on a particular islands or search online.

Weigh up the cost of flight only and the cost of booking accommodation as you may find it cheaper to book a package holiday.

There are more summer flights from June to September from some parts of Europe than in previous years.

Some Expats are choosing to fly via Europe to reach their final destination. There are some cheap alternatives with flights to Dusseldorf, Brussels, Gran Canaria, Paris, Barcelona and more before flying on to your final destination.

There are flights with Airmoroc, JetAirfly, Vueling, Binter Canarias, TAP, TACV, TUI, Thomas Cook, Binter Canarias and others that now can provide international flights into Cape Verde.

Some flights from Europe will enable the passenger to carry 46kgs of hold luggage, obviously a benefit to those who live on the islands who can shop abroad for items for their homes.

Cape Verde offers in general, an all round sunny and warm climate with the occasional rainy days, but more rainfall expected within August and September. The long white sandy beaches of Santa Maria and areas along the east and west coast on Sal Island, together with the beautiful beaches of Boavista make Cape Verde a great location to come and participate in water sports activities or to just have a relaxing holiday.

Blue seas and high winds will attract kite surfers and wind surfers for winter sports activities, while scuba diving and fishing takes place all year round. Others come to Cape Verde to sunbathe, lie on the beach or swim in the warm seas and enjoy the relaxed and non crowded beaches of Sal and Boavista.

Boavista has more white sandy beaches but much less as regards restaurants and bars or things to do than on Sal Island. New hotels and resorts have been built on Sal and more will be built on Boavista to accommodate the increasing numbers of tourists.

Some people may prefer the mountains of Santo Antao, Sao Nicolau or the cultural city of Mindelo on Sao Vicente. Hikers, walkers and cyclists have their own preferences as to which islands they want to visit. Although we have suggested some items to bring under 'Climate & Clothing' some islands may be cooler than others, have stronger winds, or you may be just planning to stay in your hotel where ladies, you may want to wear those high heel shoes!

You can read about the other Cape Verde islands within this website. There are some good books that provide information on Cape Verde. There are also various albums of photos and videos within the photo galleries on many of our information pages.

There are travel and tour companies in the UK that can help you with your inter-island travel and tour plans which can be arranged before or at the same time as booking your flight and trip. There are also a number of inter-island travel and Tour Operators here on the Cape Verde islands, some with staff that speak good English, so there is no problem with booking through them, they are very experienced, most have been operating here for years, but that is something for you to look into before you book.

International direct flights also arrive on the capital island of Santiago. From there you can fly to Boston (USA), Angola, the Canaries, Brazil and other countries. More international flights arrive on the island Sao Vicente.
