Accommodation in Cape Verde

Make sure you carry out some research before deciding which island you would prefer to visit. Travel agents do not always know a lot about the Cape Verde Islands and, travel companies may want to direct you to an island, hotel, resort which is in less demand or, that it is better for them to book for you.

Tourist Resorts

There are All Inclusive Hotels and Resorts on the main tourists islands of Sal and Boavista. The Islands of Sao Vicente and Santiago also have a number of large hotels used to accommodate travellers arriving on international and inter-island flights.

While there are large hotels and resorts being built and plans to build more n some of the other islands, there are still some pensions, guest houses and long established hotels on the islands which you may prefer. We have some links to online websites that provide more information about 'Hotels' and similar accommodation on the different islands.

Pensao | Pension

These will generally offer accommodation and breakfast. Mostly family run accommodation. They may have restaurants that are also open to non-residents.

Rental Agencies

There are Rental Agencies on the islands that manage apartments on behalf of owners, so you may wish to contact agencies on a particular island. There are also apartments advertised online with Bookings.com, Owners Direct and others.

Sal Island

The main tourist area on the island is in Santa Maria. This is where you will find most of the hotels, although a number of hotels and resorts have now also been built along the west coast. You have some established family run hotels then larger hotel chains such as the RIU and Sol Melia.

You will also find that rental properties can be let in a number of the resorts or in Santa Maria itself.

Boavista Island

The main town of Sal Rei on the island of Boavista has some small pensions and hotels which you may prefer to stay at for a few days. The larger tourist hotels are situated outside of Sal Rei. The Riu Karamboa is situated a few minutes away from the airport and approximately 10 minutes away from Sal Rei in a taxi. The Royal Decameron and the Iberostar have been accommodating tourists for a number of years and these are about 15-20mins from Sal Rei. The most recent hotel built on Boavista is the Riu Touareg which is some 30mins in a taxi from Sal Rei. The cost of a taxi into and out of Sal Rei to the Touareg could cost you 60 euros return.

Alternatively you may wish to look at rental apartments which are advertised online on various websites.

Maio Island

Most of the hotels and some rental accommodation are in and around Vila do Maio.

Santo Antao Island

These are found within the Port Novo, Ponto do Sol, Pedracin Village (which is ituated on the side of a hill).

Research

Do your homework and decide which island you would prefer to visit. Staff working at travel agencies do not always know much about the Cape Verde Islands and, travel companies may want to direct you to an island/ hotel/ resort which is in less in demand or that it is better for them to book for you. Remember, travel agents and tour operators are often restricted to booking you into certain hotels or resorts so its best to obtain the different brochures from the travel agencies and tour operators.

In addition to this search for other accommodation online but also make sure you read any recommendations or feedback from people that have stayed in apartments. How recent are their comments? Is the description of the apartment or resort accurate? Is it close to amenities? Is it noisy? Are there restaurants and shops within a few minutes walk?

There are also numerous rental agencies that can let villas, apartments and town houses, some will have use of shared communal pools or have private pools, others will not have pools. Some will be in resorts and others in or around towns on the islands. The most visited islands for tourism in Cape Verde are Sal Island and Boavista Island (also named in some brochures as Boa Vista).

Check out flight only prices too, some times you can get cheap flights and book your accommodation separately. Alternatively you may find it's cheaper to book a package deal!

Hopefully doing some research will help you choose what is right for you!
